THE ULTIMATE SIMPOSE TUTORIAL: PART ONE: GETTING TO KNOW SIMPOSE

Learn about the ins and outs of SimPose with this handy tutorial!

PAGE THREE: THE JOINT CONTROL SECTION

JOINT CONTROL is the section you go to when you want to bend, rotate, and even tilt your sims. There are a lot of options here, so pay attention!

The MENU allows you to select which limb or other feature of the sim you want to manipulate. ("ROOT", as you can see in the above picture, is selected as the default *limb, even though it technically isn't one. But now we're getting ahead of ourselves.)

The THREE SLIDERS are what you use to actually bend a limb once it is selected. Each slider bends or manipulates limbs in a particular way. SLIDER #1 rotates limbs. SLIDER #2 bends them forward or backwards. SLIDER #3 bends them sideways (going from left to right).

The RADIO BUTTONS (course, medium, fine) determine how much bend or rotation you would like as you're working. So if you choose, say, "fine", and use the sliders to bend the knee, you will not be able to bend the knee as far as if you had chosen "Course". This feature has nothing really to do with how your poses will come out; it's just something that gives people additional options when working on their poses.

The UNDO button is for the obvious.

 LIMB SELECTION

Alright, now let's look at the options in the menu under JOINT CONTROL and see which part of the body the selections manipulate or allow you to bend. The menu starts out with "ROOT" selected, but let's ignore it (and the other ones like "World-rotate", "PELVIS", etc.) and go straight to the limbs.

L/ R_LEG: controls the left or right leg at the pelvis
L/ R_LEG1: controls the knee
L/ R_FOOT: controls the ankle

L/ R_TOE0: controls the toes
L/ R_TOE01: null*
L/ R_TOE2: null*

SPINE: controls the torso at the waist
SPINE1: controls the torso, but a little bit above the waist (more like at the rib cage)
SPINE2: controls the torso, but at chest level

NECK: controls the collarbone, which allows you to twist the head, neck, and shoulders together

HEAD: controls the head

L/ R_ARM: controls the arm, but at the shoulders
L/ R_ARM: controls the arm, but at the armpit
L/ R_ARM2: controls the arm, but at the elbow
L/ R_HAND: controls the wrists
L/ R_FINGER0: null (doesn't bend anything)

*Null= will not work for most sims you eventually import into the program

Notice, like I said, how we skipped a few other options. This was done to avoid confusion. These additional options ("PELVIS", "ROOT", etc.) come more into play when you have more than one sim and/ or props on the stage. Because we're only dealing with the basics in this tutorial, we'll deal with them in a different one sometime in the future. But for now, let's ignore them and get you acquainted some more with SimPose.
